The 541-foot Russian oil tanker, Virgo, collided with the 83-foot trawler bound for Rockland, Maine, from Georges Bank with a hold full of herring. The Starbound sank, with the loss of three of the crew, two of them from Gloucester. The boat’s captain, also from Gloucester, survived. The captain and two crew members of the Russian ship were charged in Newfoundland with manslaughter. Released on bail, they returned to Russia. The charges eventually were dropped.
