Henry Francis Walling began his map-making career as an assistant surveyor for the town of Providence, Rhode Island. He later moved to New York and then to Boston where he started his own cartography business. The map shows business and residential structures and includes the owner’s name.

The Walling map showed 40 wharves throughout Gloucester and Rockport.
