2010VIDEO: Get the Whistle with Dominic NicastroPeople and Communities, Maritime & Fishing Industry, 400 Stories Project, Fishing

Listen as the late Dominic Nicastro of Gloucester, MA discusses his desire to "Get the Whistle", a symbolic way of saying that since a young age, he wanted to be the guardian of the statue of St. Peter. This is the statue that customarily families of fishermen in Gloucester would pray to, asking for the safe return of their family members from the sea. The statue is carried each year at the end of June in a processional during the St. Peter's Fiesta. According to Sal Zerilli of the Down the Fort Documentary and Archive Project, there have been six guardians of the statue of St. Peter. This is a prestigious honor in the Sicilian-American community in Gloucester. Original video shot in 2010. This video represents a partnership between the Down the Fort Documentary and Archive Project and the Gloucester400+ Stories Project.
