This is an excerpt from a life history interview conducted by members of the Down the Fort documentary and archive project with Salvatore Verga in 2009 at his home in Gloucester, MA. A native of Gloucester who was raised in the Fort neighborhood of the city, Mr. Verga was born in 1923. A fisherman and a lumper on Gloucester’s waterfront for most of his working life, he passed away in 2009. In this interview excerpt, Mr. Verga reflects on his memories of the earliest days of the St. Peter’s Fiesta, when it was a devout way for the women of the community to pray for the safety of the men in their lives who earned a living as fishermen.
