William Morris Hunt summered in Magnolia between 1877 and 1878 but did not return in 1879, the year he died.

Hunt studied and worked for several years in France. He became friends with and was heavily influenced by the work of Jean Francois Millet and the Barbizon School. Hunt was enamored of Millet’s work, taught his ideas, and is the reason the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has such a good collection of Barbizon and Impressionist work.

When Hunt taught at the Boston Museum School, he opened his classes to women and those students followed him to Magnolia during his summers there.
